Around this time of year, dozens of posts appear online offering advice on how to "deal" with (or "survive") being single on Valentine's Day. News flash: Single isn't a disease! It doesn't need a cure. Instead of focusing on romantic love, let's give the spotlight to some other, super-important types of love: the kind between mother and daughter, best friends, or proud parent and new pet.
This year, let's focus on ways to spread love to those who make our life worth living. Here are some of my favorite ways:
1. Cupcakes! These bite size goodies are perfect, a small way to brighten someone's day or make a new friend.
2. Connect with old friends or relatives. Whether it's on Skype, picking up the phone or taking 10 minutes to swing by an older relative's house for a chat, this is the "simple" present with lots of benefits. Time is the most precious gift you can give someone.
3. Write an old-fashioned love letter. I miss these. Mass produced, pre-printed cards have taken the place of heartfelt letters. Take a moment and jot down some things you appreciate about your friends and family. Send the note via Snail Mail. Trust me: In this digital age, receiving a handwritten note can make someone's day.
4. Make it personal. If you do choose to give gifts, go personal, not commercial. The things I value years later aren't expensive jewelry or electronics; they're letters from friends who've since passed away; ticket stubs from my first trip overseas; pictures of gatherings with friends now living too far away to hug; a poem written on a napkin from my mother, letting me know how much she cares about me.
5. Adopt someone in need. If you've toyed with the idea of adopting an animal, why not use today to visit local shelters? Take an afternoon to get to know your future pet. Not into animals? Why not visit nursing homes and hand out cards to the residents? Not only will you brighten someone's day, you might make some interesting new friends.
How will you spread the love today?
